History
25 years of multiple successes in volleyball
The Lionhearts Volleyball Club was founded by Alvin Spencer in 1998 within a large sports club that included football, cricket and netball teams. In 2008, the management of the Volleyball Club was handed over to Allan Mungroo. The vision then, remaining the same today, is to strive to make London Lionhearts Volleyball Club the most successful competitive and social team in London. Since then the volleyball club has grown and developed into one of the biggest and most renowned clubs of the London Volleyball Association (LVA), with teams represented in all LVA leagues and in the Super League. We are based at Mulberry Academy Shoreditch, with whom we have worked since the very beginning and have a long establish partnership. The name was inspired by a training academy called The London Lion Cubs.
Achievements:
- 2006: The club was represented by two men’s teams – competing in Premier and in Division 2 respectively – and one women’s team in the London Premier League.
- 2007: Creation of a new women’s team in Division 1, who won straight promotion to the London Premier League where it stayed for six years. The newly promoted team was named ‘Jamme Ja’ and the other one was named ‘East’, to reflect the bond between the club and its east London roots.
- As teams kept on getting promoted, new teams were formed to compete in the lower division. With time London Lionhearts Volleyball Club had a representation in each Division for both men’s and women’s leagues and with multiple teams per league. By 2011 the club manager Allan Mungroo’s vision of making Lionhearts the most socially competitive club in London was achieved.
- Between the 2013/14 and 2022/23 seasons, team East conquered the LVA’s Women’s Premier League title 8 times, not including the yearlong break due to the pandemic. Our lionesses work hard and aim to retain the title for the foreseeable future.
- 2018: Team East from the LVA league entered Volleyball England’s National League competition in Division 3. The lionesses were awarded three promotions in just four seasons and as of October 2023 the club is represented in the Women’s Super League, the most competitive league in the country.
- March 2022: The club inaugurated its junior academy for players aged 9-18. The aims of the academy reflect our values to make sports accessible to local residents who cannot afford sporting events and to get teenagers off the streets to channel their energies into sports. Parents have been very supportive and we can now rely on an involved community. We are proud to see many of our junior talents joining Team England’s Junior academy.
- Our weekly open sessions are mostly attended by non-club members confirming that we are the preferred option for beginners and intermediate level players.
